Unfortunately because of the reasons they are worn diabetic socks are functional rather than fashionable. While some manufacturers offer them in dark colors, for a diabetic who has little to no feeling in their feet due to nerve damage (neuropathy ), a more common sense and healthy approach would be for them to wear white or light colored socks.
White or lighter colored diabetic socks will reveal any bleeding or discharge from a blister or sore, which a diabetic would not be aware of if wearing dark colored socks. A diabetic with nerve damage may choose to wear diabetic socks in darker colors, however, it is imperative that they check their feet frequently during the day for blisters. Also, if the dark colored diabetic socks are not color-fast, and moisture is present, the dye could bleed into the wound and cause a secondary infection, which is dangerous to the health of the foot.
There are actually only a few manufacturers that offer diabetic socks in colors other than white or black. One such company is Land of OZ, Inc. who makes a line of diabetic socks called “Sugar Free Sox“. Per the description on their site, they offer these key features:
- “Big Stretch” Fabric enhances circulation
- “No Bind Top” maximizes leg comfort
- “Stay Up Power”
- “Seamless Toe” prevents blisters and irritation
- “Anti Microbial” coated fabric resists bacteria
Sugar Free Sox are available in color-fast light colors for both men and women. For men, white, black, Navy, Brown, and khaki. Women have a much wider choice of diabetic sock colors to choose from: Ribbed: Saphire, Lt. Blue, Merlot, Muskmelon, GreenTea, Flat Knit: Pink, White, Black. Rope & Ribbed: Merlot, Saphire). With the exception of Khaki, the same colors of compression socks that are offered for men, are also available for women. All of their sock products offer the necessary therapeutic features.
As far as fashion goes, Sugar Free Sox is about as close as you are going to get to diabetic socks that don’t look like all other brands on the market.
