Can Diabetic Socks be Fashionable

Unfortunately diabetic socks don’t exist at least not in the truest sense of what one thinks of when it comes to fashion. Every support sock manufacturer makes a white diabetic sock and many make them in not only in white, but dark colors (e.g. black, navy) as well. Wearing dark colored diabetic socks presents two caveats for a diabetic, particularly those with sensitive feet (peripheral neuropathy) who spend a large amount of time on their feet. The combination of swelling, dry skin, and friction between the skin and sock can make a diabetic much more prone to small skin injuries (e.g. blisters, scraps, pressure ulcers). If such injuries begin to bleed, a diabetic is not going to see evidence of that through a dark sock and if the socks are not color-fast, there is a risk of the dyes bleeding into the wound and causing an infection. Unfortunately, those risks present a problem for any diabetic with regard to fashion socks. Because not all diabetic socks are color-fast, it’s imperative that a diabetic inquire about that feature with any company before making a purchase from them.

Support socks for diabetics are typically available in three styles: ankle, low-cut, and mid-calf lengths. Beyond wearing white colored socks with jeans or shorts, by most anyone’s definition, would be not considered fashion socks. The thought of wearing something that resembles white tube socks with a business suit or slacks doesn’t exactly conjure up an attractive image and wearing dark socks will require that a diabetic check the areas of their feet that more prone to blisters frequently through out the day.

Some fashion socks manufacturers offer lighter sock colors. One such company is Land of OZ, Inc. who makes a line of men and women’s color-fast diabetic socks and compression socks, called “Sugar Free Sox”. For men, their colors range from black, navy, grey, brown, and khaki. For women, there is a wider more fashionable choice of colors (e.g. Ribbed: Saphire, Lt. Blue, Merlot, Muskmelon, GreenTea, Flat Knit: Pink, White, Black. Rope & Ribbed: Merlot, Saphire. Like all diabetic socks, their fashion sock offer the same features necessary for diabetics.
